This project began as a typographic exercise in hand rendered and photographic expression. Working on socially and politically relevant vocabulary, I explored the execution of letterforms with tape, string, powder, cigarettes, shadows, matches, and other unusual tools. Through this process I was able to arrive at the Rorschach Blot alphabet to make up the words “mental illness.”

In order to make Rorschach Blots I went through a process of finding the right paper that ink would not leak off of or instantly absorb into the page, and I found that paper with an adhesive side worked best for the challenge. I decided to play on the phrase “going postal,” by using postal office address stickers as the canvas to my letters. To create each letter, I dripped India ink onto the stickers and folded them in half to form two symmetrical sides. Some letters that are asymmetrical were more difficult to sculpt, so I had to get creative with the folding.

Out of this was born a public service announcement animation and poster, aiming to inform the general public about mental illness.
