Ukraine came into the global spotlight with the events leading up to Russia’s acquisition of Crimea in 2014. Russia’s impending hostility and the implication of their actions are disturbing, and have inspired me to create a "Revolution Kit" to support my motherland and encourage the fight for a free Ukraine.
I wanted to provide people the tools to rebel in a non-destructive, but fun and artistic way. I designed different spray paint stencils that can be used on their own, or overlaid to form a complete masterpiece. These come in a kit with the necessary colors included, and promotional items with the designs.
The 3 colors used are inspired by Ukrainian tradition. Yellow represents the rolling countryside fields of wheat and blue is the spacious sky. Red represents revolution and struggle against oppression, as well as being the flag colors of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army which fought tyranny and oppression during World War II.
The three stencil designs come in varying complexity. The most complex is “Independence.” Each stencil in this design can stand on it’s own, but spraying them in order makes a complete image with the message “independence” in Ukrainian. The woman breaking out of chains, is the Independence Statue in Kiev’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square, where protestors gathered to fight the corruption of the government. A less difficult stencil to put together is “Ukrainian Flag and Emblem.” This design is meant to strengthen people’s pride in their motherland. The simplest design is a popular and stirring quote of protest: “Glory to Ukraine!”
